Guardians of the Biosphere
Ever wanted to become Guardians of the Galaxy? How about Guardians of the Biosphere?!! Student scientists assemble to brainstorm ideas for sustainable resources in our area and learn about our biosphere. Students analyze plants, environment, and local needs then take that information to engineer an aquaponics garden and compare the plants grown in the water to the plants grown in the Lynn & MVLA garden patch. Students will participate in exploratory labs that examine beneficial products we can use from plants like Guar and Guayule. Students will engage in collaborative discussions on human impacts on our local ecosystems. Mr. Rodriguez is a New Mexico State University Graduate Student who is currently participating in field studies of these plants. His is co-facilitating this club with Ms. Bradley. By the end of the year, our Guardians will analyze a challenge to our local bioeconomy, develop a possible solution, design & create presentation of their solution to NMSU (New Mexico) & U of A (Arizona) SBAR staff. Who knows where Cougar Ideas could lead?!! We will be collaborating with SBAR clubs from MVLA and Mesa MS with our final project. If you like hands on, group learning then Guardians of the Biosphere is where you find your superhero power to protect your community!! Come check out Engineering with Guardians of the Biosphere!!
This program is a participant in the Sustainable Bioresources in Arid Regions (SBAR) Cohort that is tasked with identifying areas of strength specific for arid regions in order to present more favorable outcomes for bioeconomy. In addition, SBAR provides students a chance to explore different types of jobs/professions (farmer, chemical engineer, mechanic, trucker, biologist, etc.) that work together to grow what we need and identify the resources we have in our area.
Meetings: TBD
Ms. Bradley
Vet Tech Club
Every wonder what it would be like to be a veterinarian? Have you ever thought about having a pet? What would you need? How do you keep your pet healthy? Come explore these questions with Ms. Bradley. Students will brainstorm “the perfect pet”, research necessary equipment and supplies needed, connect with local animal scientists from veterinarian clinics to professors at NMSU who deal with livestock. Students will examine the impact (social, financial, and emotional) animals have on individuals, families and communities. Students will engage in regular care and management of class pets to develop organization, prioritizing skills, empathy, and knowledge of pet health care. This will require parent permission to handle animals such as turtles, lizards, rabbits, kittens, and other creatures that may come and visit our club. Come check us out!
